How to Clean the Filter and Coils of Heat Pumps

How to Clean Heat Pumps and Mini Splits

Regular maintenance of the heat pumps filter and coils is essential for keeping your heat pump running efficiently. Here's how you can clean the filter and coils of your heat pump:

Cleaning the Filter of Your Heat Pump

  1. Turn off the heat pump: Before cleaning the filter, turn off the heat pump for safety.
  2. Open the unit cover: Carefully remove the air filters from the indoor head unit. These filters are typically located in grooved channels.
  3. Gently spray the air filters: Use a kitchen sink spray nozzle to lightly spray water on the filters to remove debris. Avoid using a vacuum, as it may damage the filters.
  4. Re-install the filters: Allow the filters to dry, then place them back inside the unit cover and turn the heat pump back on.

Cleaning the Coils of Your Heat Pump

  1. Turn off the power: Switch off the power to the heat pump and remove the outer component of the condenser unit to access the coils.
  2. Remove dirt: Unscrew the top grille and use a garden hose to remove dirt from the condenser coils. Avoid spraying the fan directly to prevent damage to electrical components.
  3. Use cleaning solutions: Optionally, use condenser cleaning solutions from home improvement stores to gently brush the coils for a more thorough clean. Wipe the coils with a dry, soft cloth.
  4. Reassemble and turn on: Put the top grille back on and turn the power back on to the heat pump. Cleaning the coils helps improve energy efficiency and the cooling/heating capacity of your heat pump.

Regularly cleaning the filter and coils of your heat pump is a simple yet effective way to ensure its optimal performance and longevity.
